A possible timing attack could be carried out by modifying a PKCS#12 file that has an integrity MAC for which the password is not known. An attacker could then feed the modified PKCS#12 file to the toolkit and guess the current MAC one byte at a time. This is possible because Crypto-J uses a non-constant-time method to compare the stored MAC with the calculated MAC. This vulnerability is similar to the issue described in CVE-2015-2601.","severity":{"version":"3.1","score":3.7,"vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N","level":"low","assessor":"primary","from":"nvd"},"epss":{"day":"2026-11-07","score":0.01494,"percentile":0.74321,"model":"v2026.06.15"},"facts":{"in_kev":false,"known_exploited":false,"public_exploit":false,"fix_available":false},"cwes":["CWE-200"],"published":"2017-02-03T07:24:00Z","modified":"2026-06-17T00:54:01Z","products":[{"vendor":"dell","product":"bsafe_crypto-j"}],"references":[{"url":"http://www.securityfocus.com/archive/1/540066/30/0/threaded","tags":["x_refsource_CONFIRM","x_transferred","Mailing List","Third Party Advisory","VDB Entry"]},{"url":"http://www.securityfocus.com/bid/95831","tags":["vdb-entry","x_refsource_BID","x_transferred","Third Party Advisory","VDB Entry"]},{"url":"http://www.securitytracker.com/id/1037732","tags":["vdb-entry","x_refsource_SECTRACK","x_transferred","Third Party Advisory","VDB Entry"]},{"url":"https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2016-8217"},{"url":"https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-34fw-m7m3-5c57"}],"sources":{"cve":[{"id":"CVE-2016-8217","description":"EMC RSA BSAFE Crypto-J versions prior to 6.2.2 has a PKCS#12 Timing Attack Vulnerability.
