CVE-2016-9962

Information Exposure in RunC

6.4 MediumFix available

RunC allowed additional container processes via 'runc exec' to be ptraced by the pid 1 of the container. This allows the main processes of the container, if running as root, to gain access to file-descriptors of these new processes during the initialization and can lead to container escapes or modification of runC state before the process is fully placed inside the container.

Updated docker packages fix security vulnerability

The runc component used by docker exec feature of docker allowed additional container processes to be ptraced by the pid 1 of the container. This allows the main processes of the container, if running as root, to gain low-level access to these new processes during initialization. An attacker can, depending on the nature of the incoming process, leverage this to elevate access to the host. This ranges from accessing host content through the file descriptors of the incoming process to, potentially, a complete container escape by leveraging memory access or syscall interception (CVE-2016-9962).

Security update for containerd, docker, runc

This update for

  • containerd
  • docker to 1.12.6
  • runc fixes the two issues.

This security issue was fixed:

  • CVE-2016-9962: A difficult to exploit race condition caused by passing a file descriptor from the host's filesystem into the container could have allowed the guest to escape(bsc#1012568).

For docker this non-security issue was fixed:

  • bsc#1019251: Waiting when starting the docker service

Security update for containerd, docker, docker-runc, golang-github-docker-libnetwork, runc

This update for containerd, docker, docker-runc, golang-github-docker-libnetwork, runc fixes the following issues:

Security issues fixed:

  • CVE-2018-16875: Fixed a CPU Denial of Service (bsc#1118899).
  • CVE-2018-16874: Fixed a vulnerabity in go get command which could allow directory traversal in GOPATH mode (bsc#1118898).
  • CVE-2018-16873: Fixed a vulnerability in go get command which could allow remote code execution when executed with -u in GOPATH mode (bsc#1118897).
  • CVE-2019-5736: Effectively copying /proc/self/exe during re-exec to avoid write attacks to the host runc binary, which could lead to a container breakout (bsc#1121967).

Other changes and bug fixes:

  • Update shell completion to use Group: System/Shells.
  • Add daemon.json file with rotation logs configuration (bsc#1114832)
  • Update to Docker 18.09.1-ce (bsc#1124308) and to to runc 96ec2177ae84. See upstream changelog in the packaged /usr/share/doc/packages/docker/CHANGELOG.md.
  • Disable leap based builds for kubic flavor (bsc#1121412).
  • Allow users to explicitly specify the NIS domain name of a container (bsc#1001161).
  • Update docker.service to match upstream and avoid rlimit problems (bsc#1112980).
  • Update go requirements to >= go1.10
  • Use -buildmode=pie for tests and binary build (bsc#1048046 and bsc#1051429).
  • Remove the usage of 'cp -r' to reduce noise in the build logs.

Security update for docker-stable

This update for docker-stable fixes the following issues:

  • Include historical changelog data from before the docker-stable fork. The initial changelog entry did technically provide all the necessary information, but our CVE tracking tools do not understand how the package is forked and so it seems that this package does not include fixes for ~12 years of updates. So, include a copy of the original package's changelog up until the fork point. (bsc#1250596)

  • Remove git-core recommends on SLE. Most SLE systems have installRecommends=yes by default and thus end up installing git with Docker. bsc#1250508

This feature is mostly intended for developers ('docker build git://') so most users already have the dependency installed, and the error when git is missing is fairly straightforward (so they can easily figure out what they need to install).

  • Backport https://github.com/moby/moby/pull/48517. bsc#1247362

  • Update to docker-buildx v0.25.0. Upstream changelog: https://github.com/docker/buildx/releases/tag/v0.25.0

  • Do not try to inject SUSEConnect secrets when in Rootless Docker mode, as Docker does not have permission to access the host zypper credentials in this mode (and unprivileged users cannot disable the feature using /etc/docker/suse-secrets-enable.) bsc#1240150

  • Initial docker-stable fork, forked from Docker 24.0.7-ce release (packaged on 2024-02-14). The original changelog is included below for historical reference.
