net/mlx5: Add a timeout to acquire the command queue semaphore

7.8 HighFix available

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

net/mlx5: Add a timeout to acquire the command queue semaphore

Prevent forced completion handling on an entry that has not yet been assigned an index, causing an out of bounds access on idx = -22. Instead of waiting indefinitely for the sem, blocking flow now waits for index to be allocated or a sem acquisition timeout before beginning the timer for FW completion.

Kernel log example: mlx5_core 0000:06:00.0: wait_func_handle_exec_timeout:1128:(pid 185911): cmd[-22]: CREATE_UCTX(0xa04) No done completion

kernel security update

The Linux Kernel, the operating system core itself.

Security Fix(es):

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

usb: gadget: ncm: Avoid dropping datagrams of properly parsed NTBs

It is observed sometimes when tethering is used over NCM with Windows 11 as host, at some instances, the gadget_giveback has one byte appended at the end of a proper NTB. When the NTB is parsed, unwrap call looks for any leftover bytes in SKB provided by u_ether and if there are any pending bytes, it treats them as a separate NTB and parses it. But in case the second NTB (as per unwrap call) is faulty/corrupt, all the datagrams that were parsed properly in the first NTB and saved in rx_list are dropped.

Adding a few custom traces showed the following: [002] d..1 7828.532866: dwc3_gadget_giveback: ep1out: req 000000003868811a length 1025/16384 zsI ==> 0 [002] d..1 7828.532867: ncm_unwrap_ntb: K: ncm_unwrap_ntb toprocess: 1025 [002] d..1 7828.532867: ncm_unwrap_ntb: K: ncm_unwrap_ntb nth: 1751999342 [002] d..1 7828.532868: ncm_unwrap_ntb: K: ncm_unwrap_ntb seq: 0xce67 [002] d..1 7828.532868: ncm_unwrap_ntb: K: ncm_unwrap_ntb blk_len: 0x400 [002] d..1 7828.532868: ncm_unwrap_ntb: K: ncm_unwrap_ntb ndp_len: 0x10 [002] d..1 7828.532869: ncm_unwrap_ntb: K: Parsed NTB with 1 frames

In this case, the giveback is of 1025 bytes and block length is 1024. The rest 1 byte (which is 0x00) won't be parsed resulting in drop of all datagrams in rx_list.

Same is case with packets of size 2048: [002] d..1 7828.557948: dwc3_gadget_giveback: ep1out: req 0000000011dfd96e length 2049/16384 zsI ==> 0 [002] d..1 7828.557949: ncm_unwrap_ntb: K: ncm_unwrap_ntb nth: 1751999342 [002] d..1 7828.557950: ncm_unwrap_ntb: K: ncm_unwrap_ntb blk_len: 0x800

Lecroy shows one byte coming in extra confirming that the byte is coming in from PC:

Transfer 2959 - Bytes Transferred(1025) Timestamp((18.524 843 590)

  • Transaction 8391 - Data(1025 bytes) Timestamp(18.524 843 590) --- Packet 4063861 Data(1024 bytes) Duration(2.117us) Idle(14.700ns) Timestamp(18.524 843 590) --- Packet 4063863 Data(1 byte) Duration(66.160ns) Time(282.000ns) Timestamp(18.524 845 722)

According to Windows driver, no ZLP is needed if wBlockLength is non-zero, because the non-zero wBlockLength has already told the function side the size of transfer to be expected. However, there are in-market NCM devices that rely on ZLP as long as the wBlockLength is multiple of wMaxPacketSize. To deal with such devices, it pads an extra 0 at end so the transfer is no longer multiple of wMaxPacketSize.(CVE-2024-27405)

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

ipv6: fix potential "struct net" leak in inet6_rtm_getaddr()

It seems that if userspace provides a correct IFA_TARGET_NETNSID value but no IFA_ADDRESS and IFA_LOCAL attributes, inet6_rtm_getaddr() returns -EINVAL with an elevated "struct net" refcount.(CVE-2024-27417)

kernel security update

The Linux Kernel, the operating system core itself.

Security Fix(es):

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

ubifs: Set page uptodate in the correct place

Page cache reads are lockless, so setting the freshly allocated page uptodate before we've overwritten it with the data it's supposed to have in it will allow a simultaneous reader to see old data. Move the call to SetPageUptodate into ubifs_write_end(), which is after we copied the new data into the page.(CVE-2024-35821)

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

kprobes: Fix possible use-after-free issue on kprobe registration

When unloading a module, its state is changing MODULE_STATE_LIVE -> MODULE_STATE_GOING -> MODULE_STATE_UNFORMED. Each change will take a time. is_module_text_address() and __module_text_address() works with MODULE_STATE_LIVE and MODULE_STATE_GOING. If we use is_module_text_address() and __module_text_address() separately, there is a chance that the first one is succeeded but the next one is failed because module->state becomes MODULE_STATE_UNFORMED between those operations.

In check_kprobe_address_safe(), if the second __module_text_address() is failed, that is ignored because it expected a kernel_text address. But it may have failed simply because module->state has been changed to MODULE_STATE_UNFORMED. In this case, arm_kprobe() will try to modify non-exist module text address (use-after-free).

To fix this problem, we should not use separated is_module_text_address() and __module_text_address(), but use only __module_text_address() once and do try_module_get(module) which is only available with MODULE_STATE_LIVE.(CVE-2024-35955)

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

net/sched: taprio: always validate TCA_TAPRIO_ATTR_PRIOMAP

If one TCA_TAPRIO_ATTR_PRIOMAP attribute has been provided, taprio_parse_mqprio_opt() must validate it, or userspace can inject arbitrary data to the kernel, the second time taprio_change() is called.

First call (with valid attributes) sets dev->num_tc to a non zero value.

Second call (with arbitrary mqprio attributes) returns early from taprio_parse_mqprio_opt() and bad things can happen.(CVE-2024-36974)

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

tcp: Fix shift-out-of-bounds in dctcp_update_alpha().

In dctcp_update_alpha(), we use a module parameter dctcp_shift_g as follows:

alpha -= min_not_zero(alpha, alpha >> dctcp_shift_g); ... delivered_ce <<= (10 - dctcp_shift_g);

It seems syzkaller started fuzzing module parameters and triggered shift-out-of-bounds [0] by setting 100 to dctcp_shift_g:

memcpy((void*)0x20000080, "/sys/module/tcp_dctcp/parameters/dctcp_shift_g\000", 47); res = syscall(__NR_openat, /fd=/0xffffffffffffff9cul, /file=/0x20000080ul, /flags=/2ul, /mode=/0ul); memcpy((void*)0x20000000, "100\000", 4); syscall(__NR_write, /fd=/r[0], /val=/0x20000000ul, /len=/4ul);

Let's limit the max value of dctcp_shift_g by param_set_uint_minmax().

With this patch:

echo 10 > /sys/module/tcp_dctcp/parameters/dctcp_shift_g

cat /sys/module/tcp_dctcp/parameters/dctcp_shift_g

10

echo 11 > /sys/module/tcp_dctcp/parameters/dctcp_shift_g

kernel security update

The Linux Kernel, the operating system core itself.

Security Fix(es):

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

efi: libstub: only free priv.runtime_map when allocated

priv.runtime_map is only allocated when efi_novamap is not set. Otherwise, it is an uninitialized value. In the error path, it is freed unconditionally. Avoid passing an uninitialized value to free_pool. Free priv.runtime_map only when it was allocated.

This bug was discovered and resolved using Coverity Static Analysis Security Testing (SAST) by Synopsys, Inc.(CVE-2024-33619)

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

fpga: region: add owner module and take its refcount

The current implementation of the fpga region assumes that the low-level module registers a driver for the parent device and uses its owner pointer to take the module's refcount. This approach is problematic since it can lead to a null pointer dereference while attempting to get the region during programming if the parent device does not have a driver.

To address this problem, add a module owner pointer to the fpga_region struct and use it to take the module's refcount. Modify the functions for registering a region to take an additional owner module parameter and rename them to avoid conflicts. Use the old function names for helper macros that automatically set the module that registers the region as the owner. This ensures compatibility with existing low-level control modules and reduces the chances of registering a region without setting the owner.

Also, update the documentation to keep it consistent with the new interface for registering an fpga region.(CVE-2024-35247)

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

eeprom: at24: fix memory corruption race condition

If the eeprom is not accessible, an nvmem device will be registered, the read will fail, and the device will be torn down. If another driver accesses the nvmem device after the teardown, it will reference invalid memory.

Move the failure point before registering the nvmem device.(CVE-2024-35848)

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

block: fix module reference leakage from bdev_open_by_dev error path

At the time bdev_may_open() is called, module reference is grabbed already, hence module reference should be released if bdev_may_open() failed.

This problem is found by code review.(CVE-2024-35859)

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

mm/slab: make __free(kfree) accept error pointers

Currently, if an automatically freed allocation is an error pointer that will lead to a crash. An example of this is in wm831x_gpio_dbg_show().

171 char *label __free(kfree) = gpiochip_dup_line_label(chip, i); 172 if (IS_ERR(label)) { 173 dev_err(wm831x->dev, "Failed to duplicate label\n"); 174 continue; 175 }

The auto clean up function should check for error pointers as well, otherwise we're going to keep hitting issues like this.(CVE-2024-36890)

OSVUBUNTU-CVE-2024-38556 5.7

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net/mlx5: Add a timeout to acquire the command queue semaphore Prevent forced completion handling on an entry that has not yet been assigned an index, causing an out of bounds access on idx = -22.
