Git is a fast, scalable, distributed revision control system with an unusually rich command set that provides both high-level operations and full access to internals. When reading a config value, Git strips any trailing carriage return and line feed (CRLF). When writing a config entry, values with a trailing CR are not quoted, causing the CR to be lost when the config is later read. When initializing a submodule, if the submodule path contains a trailing CR, the altered path is read resulting in the submodule being checked out to an incorrect location. If a symlink exists that points the altered path to the submodule hooks directory, and the submodule contains an executable post-checkout hook, the script may be unintentionally executed after checkout. This vulnerability is fixed in v2.43.7, v2.44.4, v2.45.4, v2.46.4, v2.47.3, v2.48.2, v2.49.1, and v2.50.1.(CVE-2025-48384)
Git is a fast, scalable, distributed revision control system with an unusually rich command set that provides both high-level operations and full access to internals. The wincred credential helper uses a static buffer (target) as a unique key for storing and comparing against internal storage. This credential helper does not properly bounds check the available space remaining in the buffer before appending to it with wcsncat(), leading to potential buffer overflows. git-lfs security update
Git Large File Storage (LFS) replaces large files such as audio samples, videos, datasets, and graphics with text pointers inside Git, while storing the file contents on a remote server.
Security Fix(es):
Processing an incomplete post-handshake message for a QUIC connection can cause a panic.(CVE-2023-39321)
QUIC connections do not set an upper bound on the amount of data buffered when reading post-handshake messages, allowing a malicious QUIC connection to cause unbounded memory growth. With fix, connections now consistently reject messages larger than 65KiB in size.(CVE-2023-39322)
Calling Verify with a VerifyOptions.KeyUsages that contains ExtKeyUsageAny unintentionally disabledpolicy validation. This only affected certificate chains which contain policy graphs, which are rather uncommon.(CVE-2025-22874)
Git LFS is a Git extension for versioning large files. In Git LFS versions 0.5.2 through 3.7.0, when populating a Git repository's working tree with the contents of Git LFS objects, certain Git LFS commands may write to files visible outside the current Git working tree if symbolic or hard links exist which collide with the paths of files tracked by Git LFS. The git lfs checkout and git lfs pull commands do not check for symbolic links before writing to files in the working tree, allowing an attacker to craft a repository containing symbolic or hard links that cause Git LFS to write to arbitrary file system locations accessible to the user running these commands. As well, when the git lfs checkout and git lfs pull commands are run in a bare repository, they could write to files visible outside the repository. The vulnerability is fixed in version 3.7.1. As a workaround, support for symlinks in Git may be disabled by setting the core.symlinks configuration option to false, after which further clones and fetches will not create symbolic links. However, any symbolic or hard links in existing repositories will still provide the opportunity for Git LFS to write to their targets.(CVE-2025-26625)
Gitk is a Tcl/Tk based Git history browser. Starting with 2.41.0, a Git repository can be crafted in such a way that with some social engineering a user who has cloned the repository can be tricked into running any script (e.g., Bourne shell, Perl, Python, ...) supplied by the attacker by invoking gitk filename, where filename has a particular structure. The script is run with the privileges of the user. This vulnerability is fixed in 2.43.7, 2.44.4, 2.45.4, 2.46.4, 2.47.3, 2.48.2, 2.49.1, and 2.50.(CVE-2025-27614)
The go command may execute unexpected commands when operating in untrusted VCS repositories. This occurs when possibly dangerous VCS configuration is present in repositories. This can happen when a repository was fetched via one VCS (e.g. Git), but contains metadata for another VCS (e.g. Mercurial). Modules which are retrieved using the go command line, i.e. via "go get", are not affected.(CVE-2025-4674)
Git GUI allows you to use the Git source control management tools via a GUI. When a user clones an untrusted repository and is tricked into editing a file located in a maliciously named directory in the repository, then Git GUI can create and overwrite files for which the user has write permission. This vulnerability is fixed in 2.43.7, 2.44.4, 2.45.4, 2.46.4, 2.47.3, 2.48.2, 2.49.1, and 2.50.1.(CVE-2025-46835)
Cancelling a query (e.g. by cancelling the context passed to one of the query methods) during a call to the Scan method of the returned Rows can result in unexpected results if other queries are being made in parallel. This can result in a race condition that may overwrite the expected results with those of another query, causing the call to Scan to return either unexpected results from the other query or an error.(CVE-2025-47907)

Git Large File Storage (LFS) replaces large files such as audio samples, videos, datasets, and graphics with text pointers inside Git, while storing the file contents on a remote server.
Security Fix(es):
The filepath.Walk and filepath.WalkDir functions are documented as not following symbolic links, but both functions are susceptible to a TOCTOU (time of check/time of use) race condition where a portion of the path being walked is replaced with a symbolic link while the walk is in progress.(CVE-2024-8244)
Starting with 1.7.0, when a user clones an untrusted repository and runs gitk without additional command arguments, files for which the user has write permission can be created and truncated. The option Support per-file encoding must have been enabled before in Gitk's Preferences. This option is disabled by default. The same happens when Show origin of this line is used in the main window (regardless of whether Support per-file encoding is enabled or not). This vulnerability is fixed in 2.43.7, 2.44.4, 2.45.4, 2.46.4, 2.47.3, 2.48.2, 2.49.1, and 2.50.1.(CVE-2025-27613)

Security update for git
This update for git fixes the following issues:
-
Update to 2.51.0
- UI, Workflows & Features
- Userdiff patterns for the R language have been added.
- Documentation for "git send-email" has been updated with a bit more credential helper and OAuth information.
- "git cat-file --batch" learns to understand %(objectmode) atom to allow the caller to tell missing objects (due to repository corruption) and submodules (whose commit objects are OK to be missing) apart.
- "git diff --no-index dirA dirB" can limit the comparison with pathspec at the end of the command line, just like normal "git diff".
- "git subtree" (in contrib/) learned to grok GPG signing its commits.
- "git whatchanged" that is longer to type than "git log --raw" which is its modern rough equivalent has outlived its usefulness more than 10 years ago. Plan to deprecate and remove it.
- An interchange format for stash entries is defined, and subcommand of "git stash" to import/export has been added.
- "git merge/pull" has been taught the "--compact-summary" option to use the compact-summary format, intead of diffstat, when showing the summary of the incoming changes.
- "git imap-send" has been broken for a long time, which has been resurrected and then taught to talk OAuth2.0 etc.
- Some error messages from "git imap-send" has been updated.
- When "git daemon" sees a signal while attempting to accept() a new client, instead of retrying, it skipped it by mistake, which has been corrected.
- The reftable ref backend has matured enough; Git 3.0 will make it the default format in a newly created repositories by default.
- "netrc" credential helper has been improved to understand textual service names (like smtp) in addition to the numeric port numbers (like 25).
- Lift the limitation to use changed-path filter in "git log" so that it can be used for a pathspec with multiple literal paths.
- Clean up the way how signature on commit objects are exported to and imported from fast-import stream.
- Remove unsupported, unused, and unsupportable old option from "git log".
- Document recently added "git imap-send --list" with an example.
- "git pull" learned to pay attention to pull.autostash configuration variable, which overrides rebase/merge.autostash.
- "git for-each-ref" learns "--start-after" option to help applications that want to page its output.
- "git switch" and "git restore" are declared to be no longer experimental.
- "git -c alias.foo=bar foo -h baz" reported "'foo' is aliased to 'bar'" and then went on to run "git foo -h baz", which was unexpected. Tighten the rule so that alias expansion is reported only when "-h" is the sole option.
- Performance, Internal Implementation, Development Support etc.
- "git pack-objects" learned to find delta bases from blobs at the same path, using the --path-walk API.
- CodingGuidelines update.
- Add settings for Solaris 10 & 11.
- Meson-based build/test framework now understands TAP output generated by our tests.
- "Do not explicitly initialize to zero" rule has been clarified in the CodingGuidelines document.
- A test helper "test_seq" function learned the "-f <fmt>" option, which allowed us to simplify a lot of test scripts.
- A lot of stale stuff has been removed from the contrib/ hierarchy.
- "git push" and "git fetch" are taught to update refs in batches to gain performance.
- Some code paths in "git prune" used to ignore the passed-in
repository object and used the
the_repositorysingleton instance instead, which has been corrected. - Update ".clang-format" and ".editorconfig" to match our style guide a bit better.
- "make coccicheck"…
