kernel security update

The Linux Kernel, the operating system core itself.

Security Fix(es):

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

crypto: qcom-rng - ensure buffer for generate is completely filled

The generate function in struct rng_alg expects that the destination buffer is completely filled if the function returns 0. qcom_rng_read() can run into a situation where the buffer is partially filled with randomness and the remaining part of the buffer is zeroed since qcom_rng_generate() doesn't check the return value. This issue can be reproduced by running the following from libkcapi:

kcapi-rng -b 9000000 > OUTFILE

The generated OUTFILE will have three huge sections that contain all zeros, and this is caused by the code where the test 'val & PRNG_STATUS_DATA_AVAIL' fails.

Let's fix this issue by ensuring that qcom_rng_read() always returns with a full buffer if the function returns success. Let's also have qcom_rng_generate() return the correct value.

Here's some statistics from the ent project (https://www.fourmilab.ch/random/) that shows information about the quality of the generated numbers:

$ ent -c qcom-random-before
Value Char Occurrences Fraction
  0           606748   0.067416
  1            33104   0.003678

255           33239   0.003693

Total:       9000000   1.000000

Entropy = 7.811590 bits per byte.

Optimum compression would reduce the size
of this 9000000 byte file by 2 percent.

Chi square distribution for 9000000 samples is 9329962.81, and
randomly would exceed this value less than 0.01 percent of the
times.

Arithmetic mean value of data bytes is 119.3731 (127.5 = random).
Monte Carlo value for Pi is 3.197293333 (error 1.77 percent).
Serial correlation coefficient is 0.159130 (totally uncorrelated =
0.0).

Without this patch, the results of the chi-square test is 0.01%, and the numbers are certainly not random according to ent's project page. The results improve with this patch:

$ ent -c qcom-random-after

  0            35432   0.003937

If we get a deadlock after the fb lookup in drm_mode_page_flip_ioctl() we proceed to unref the fb and then retry the whole thing from the top. But we forget to reset the fb pointer back to NULL, and so if we then get another error during the retry, before the fb lookup, we proceed the unref the same fb again without having gotten another reference. The end result is that the fb will (eventually) end up being freed while it's still in use.

Reset fb to NULL once we've unreffed it to avoid doing it again until we've done another fb lookup.

This turned out to be pretty easy to hit on a DG2 when doing async flips (and CONFIG_DEBUG_WW_MUTEX_SLOWPATH=y). The first symptom I saw that drm_closefb() simply got stuck in a busy loop while walking the framebuffer list. Fortunately I was able to convince it to oops instead, and from there it was easier to track down the culprit.(CVE-2023-52486)

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

media: mtk-jpeg: Fix use after free bug due to error path handling in mtk_jpeg_dec_device_run

In mtk_jpeg_probe, &jpeg->job_timeout_work is bound with mtk_jpeg_job_timeout_work.

In mtk_jpeg_dec_device_run, if error happens in mtk_jpeg_set_dec_dst, it will finally start the worker while mark the job as finished by invoking v4l2_m2m_job_finish.

There are two methods to trigger the bug. If we remove the module, it which will call mtk_jpeg_remove to make cleanup. The possible sequence is as follows, which will cause a use-after-free bug.

CPU0 CPU1 mtk_jpeg_dec_... | start worker | |mtk_jpeg_job_timeout_work mtk_jpeg_remove | v4l2_m2m_release | kfree(m2m_dev); | | | v4l2_m2m_get_curr_priv | m2m_dev->curr_ctx //use

If we close the file descriptor, which will call mtk_jpeg_release, it will have a similar sequence.

Fix this bug by starting timeout worker only if started jpegdec worker successfully. Then v4l2_m2m_job_finish will only be called in either mtk_jpeg_job_timeout_work or mtk_jpeg_dec_device_run.(CVE-2023-52491)

Chenyuan Yang discovered that the btrfs file system in the Linux kernel did not properly handle read operations on newly created subvolumes in certain conditions. A local attacker could use this to cause a denial of service (system crash). (CVE-2024-23850)

It was discovered that a race condition existed in the Bluetooth subsystem in the Linux kernel, leading to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. A privileged local attacker could use this to possibly cause a denial of service (system crash). (CVE-2024-24860)

Several security issues were discovered in the Linux kernel. An attacker could possibly use these to compromise the system. This update corrects flaws in the following subsystems:

  • Architecture specifics;
  • Block layer;
  • Cryptographic API;
  • Android drivers;…

linux-aws, linux-aws-5.15 vulnerabilities

Chih-Yen Chang discovered that the KSMBD implementation in the Linux kernel did not properly validate certain data structure fields when parsing lease contexts, leading to an out-of-bounds read vulnerability. A remote attacker could use this to cause a denial of service (system crash) or possibly expose sensitive information. (CVE-2023-1194)

Quentin Minster discovered that a race condition existed in the KSMBD implementation in the Linux kernel, leading to a use-after-free vulnerability. A remote attacker could use this to cause a denial of service (system crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code. (CVE-2023-32254)

It was discovered that a race condition existed in the KSMBD implementation in the Linux kernel when handling session connections, leading to a use- after-free vulnerability. A remote attacker could use this to cause a denial of service (system crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code. (CVE-2023-32258)

It was discovered that the KSMBD implementation in the Linux kernel did not properly validate buffer sizes in certain operations, leading to an integer underflow and out-of-bounds read vulnerability. A remote attacker could use this to cause a denial of service (system crash) or possibly expose sensitive information. (CVE-2023-38427)

Chih-Yen Chang discovered that the KSMBD implementation in the Linux kernel did not properly validate SMB request protocol IDs, leading to a out-of- bounds read vulnerability. A remote attacker could possibly use this to cause a denial of service (system crash). (CVE-2023-38430)

Chih-Yen Chang discovered that the KSMBD implementation in the Linux kernel did not properly validate packet header sizes in certain situations, leading to an out-of-bounds read vulnerability. A remote attacker could use this to cause a denial of service (system crash) or possibly expose sensitive information. (CVE-2023-38431)

It was discovered that the KSMBD implementation in the Linux kernel did not properly handle session setup requests, leading to an out-of-bounds read vulnerability. A remote attacker could use this to expose sensitive information. (CVE-2023-3867)

Pratyush Yadav discovered that the Xen network backend implementation in the Linux kernel did not properly handle zero length data request, leading to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. An attacker in a guest VM could possibly use this to cause a denial of service (host domain crash). (CVE-2023-46838)

It was discovered that the IPv6 implementation of the Linux kernel did not properly manage route cache memory usage. A remote attacker could use this to cause a denial of service (memory exhaustion). (CVE-2023-52340)

It was discovered that the device mapper driver in the Linux kernel did not properly validate target size during certain memory allocations. A local attacker could use this to cause a denial of service (system crash). (CVE-2023-52429, CVE-2024-23851)
