Rogue backends can cause DoS of guests via high frequency events T[his CNA information record...

6.5 MediumFix available

Rogue backends can cause DoS of guests via high frequency events T[his CNA information record relates to multiple CVEs; the text explains which aspects/vulnerabilities correspond to which CVE.] Xen offers the ability to run PV backends in regular unprivileged guests, typically referred to as "driver domains". Running PV backends in driver domains has one primary security advantage: if a driver domain gets compromised, it doesn't have the privileges to take over the system. However, a malicious driver domain could try to attack other guests via sending events at a high frequency leading to a Denial of Service in the guest due to trying to service interrupts for elongated amounts of time. There are three affected backends: * blkfront patch 1, CVE-2021-28711 * netfront patch 2, CVE-2021-28712 * hvc_xen (console) patch 3, CVE-2021-28713

kernel security update

The Linux Kernel, the operating system core itself.

Security Fix(es):

In the Linux kernel through 5.15.2, mwifiex_usb_recv in drivers/net/wireless/marvell/mwifiex/usb.c allows an attacker (who can connect a crafted USB device) to cause a denial of service (skb_over_panic).(CVE-2021-43976)

In bpf_skb_change_head of filter.c, there is a possible out of bounds read due to a use after free. This could lead to local escalation of privilege with System execution privileges needed. User interaction is not needed for exploitation.Product: AndroidVersions: Android kernelAndroid ID: A-154177719References: Upstream kernel(CVE-2021-0941)

In __f2fs_setxattr in fs/f2fs/xattr.c in the Linux kernel through 5.15.11, there is an out-of-bounds memory access when an inode has an invalid last xattr entry.(CVE-2021-45469)

A use-after-free exists in drivers/tee/tee_shm.c in the TEE subsystem in the Linux kernel through 5.15.11. This occurs because of a race condition in tee_shm_get_from_id during an attempt to free a shared memory object.(CVE-2021-44733)

In ufshcd_eh_device_reset_handler of ufshcd.c, there is a possible out of bounds read due to a missing bounds check. This could lead to local information disclosure with System execution privileges needed. User interaction is not needed for exploitation.Product: AndroidVersions: Android kernelAndroid ID: A-194696049References: Upstream kernel(CVE-2021-39657)

A flaw memory leak in the Linux kernel s eBPF for the Simulated networking device driver in the way user uses BPF for the device such that function nsim_map_alloc_elem being called. A local user could use this flaw to get unauthorized access to some data.(CVE-2021-4135)

There are some measures taken for avoiding to pile up too much data, but those can be bypassed by the guest: There is a timeout how long the client side of an interface can stop consuming new packets before it is assumed to have stalled, but this timeout is rather long. Using a UDP connection on a fast interface can easily accumulate gigabytes of data in that time.(CVE-2021-28715)

The timeout could even never trigger if the guest manages to have only one free slot in its RX queue ring page and the next package would require more than one free slot, which may be the case when using GSO, XDP, or software hashing.(CVE-2021-28714)

Updated kernel packages fix security vulnerabilities

This kernel update is based on upstream 5.15.11 and fixes at least the following security issues:

netdevsim: Zero-initialize memory for new map's value in function nsim_bpf_map_alloc (CVE-2021-4135).

Potentially malicious XEN PV backends can cause guest DoS due to unhardened frontends in the guests, even though this ought to have been prevented by containing them within a driver domain. This update fixes the issue tracked as XSA-391: blkfront (CVE-2021-28711), netfront (CVE-2021-28712), hvc_xen (CVE-2021-28713).

The Linux kernel's xen-netback backend driver can be forced by guests to queue arbitrary amounts of network data, finally causing an out of memory situation in the domain the backend is running in (usually dom0). This update fixes the issues tracked as XSA-392 (CVE-2021-28714, CVE-2021-28715).

In __f2fs_setxattr in fs/f2fs/xattr.c in the Linux kernel through 5.15.11, there is an out-of-bounds memory access when an inode has an invalid last xattr entry (CVE-2021-45469).

rds: memory leak in __rds_conn_create() (CVE-2021-45480).

In addition to the upstream changes, we also have added the following fixes:

  • ALSA: hda/hdmi: Disable silent stream on GLK
  • arm64: vdso32: require CROSS_COMPILE_COMPAT for gcc+bfd
  • ext4: check for inconsistent extents between index and leaf block
  • ext4: check for out-of-order index extents in ext4_valid_extent_entries()
  • ext4: prevent partial update of the extent blocks
  • HID: intel-ish-hid: ipc: Specify no cache snooping on TGL and ADL
  • HID: potential dereference of null pointer
  • iwlwifi: mvm: Increase the scan timeout guard to 30 seconds
  • KVM: VMX: clear vmx_x86_ops.sync_pir_to_irr if APICv is disabled
  • net: amd-xgbe: Add Support for Yellow Carp Ethernet device
  • net: usb: lan78xx: add Allied Telesis AT29M2-AF
  • netfs: fix parameter of cleanup()
  • NFSD: Fix READDIR buffer overflow
  • PM: sleep: Fix error handling in dpm_prepare()
  • restored legacy NTLM support in cifs (mga#29641)
  • revert: "rtw88: 8821c: disable the ASPM of RTL8821CE"
  • rtw88: add quirk to disable pci caps on HP 250 G7 Notebook PC
  • rtw88: Disable PCIe ASPM while doing NAPI poll on 8821CE
  • rtw88: don't check CRC of VHT-SIG-B in 802.11ac signal
  • rtw88: 8822c: update rx settings to prevent potential hw deadlock
  • rtw89: 8852a: correct bit definition of dfs_en

For other upstream fixes, see the referenced changelogs.

Updated kernel-linus packages fix security vulnerabilities

This kernel-linus update is based on upstream 5.15.11 and fixes at least the following security issues:

netdevsim: Zero-initialize memory for new map's value in function nsim_bpf_map_alloc (CVE-2021-4135).

This update fixes the issues tracked as XSA-392 (CVE-2021-28714, CVE-2021-28715).

rds: memory leak in __rds_conn_create() (CVE-2021-45480).

For other upstream fixes, see the referenced changelogs.

Security update for the Linux Kernel

The SUSE Linux Enterprise 15 SP2 LTSS kernel was updated to receive various security and bugfixes.

The following security bugs were fixed:

  • CVE-2022-0185: Incorrect param length parsing in legacy_parse_param which could have led to a local privilege escalation (bsc#1194517).
  • CVE-2022-0322: Fixed a denial of service in SCTP sctp_addto_chunk (bsc#1194985).
  • CVE-2021-44733: Fixed a use-after-free exists in drivers/tee/tee_shm.c in the TEE subsystem in the Linux kernel that occured because of a race condition in tee_shm_get_from_id during an attempt to free a shared memory object (bnc#1193767).
  • CVE-2021-4197: Fixed a cgroup issue where lower privileged processes could write to fds of lower privileged ones that could lead to privilege escalation (bsc#1194302).
  • CVE-2021-4135: Fixed an information leak in the nsim_bpf_map_alloc function (bsc#1193927).
  • CVE-2021-4202: Fixed a race condition during NFC device remove which could lead to a use-after-free memory corruption (bsc#1194529)
  • CVE-2021-4083: A read-after-free memory flaw was found in the Linux kernel's garbage collection for Unix domain socket file handlers in the way users call close() and fget() simultaneously and can potentially trigger a race condition. This flaw allowed a local user to crash the system or escalate their privileges on the system. (bnc#1193727).
  • CVE-2021-4149: Fixed a locking condition in btrfs which could lead to system deadlocks (bsc#1194001).
  • CVE-2021-45485: The IPv6 implementation in net/ipv6/output_core.c had an information leak because of certain use of a hash table which, although big, doesn't properly consider that IPv6-based attackers can typically choose among many IPv6 source addresses (bnc#1194094).
  • CVE-2021-45486: The IPv4 implementation in net/ipv4/route.c had an information leak because the hash table is very small (bnc#1194087).
  • CVE-2021-4001: A race condition was found in the Linux kernel's ebpf verifier between bpf_map_update_elem and bpf_map_freeze due to a missing lock in kernel/bpf/syscall.c. In this flaw, a local user with a special privilege (cap_sys_admin or cap_bpf) can modify the frozen mapped address space. (bnc#1192990).
  • CVE-2021-28715: Guest can force Linux netback driver to hog large amounts of kernel memory. Incoming data packets for a guest in the Linux kernel's netback driver are buffered until the guest is ready to process them. There are some measures taken for avoiding to pile up too much data, but those can be bypassed by the guest: There was a timeout how long the client side of an interface can stop consuming new packets before it is assumed to have stalled, but this timeout is rather long (60 seconds by default). Using a UDP connection on a fast interface can easily accumulate gigabytes of data in that time. (CVE-2021-28715) The timeout could even never trigger if the guest manages to have only one free slot in its RX queue ring page and the next package would require more than one free slot, which may be the case when using GSO, XDP, or software hashing. It was discovered that the Packet network protocol implementation in the Linux kernel contained a double-free vulnerability. A local attacker could use this to cause a denial of service (system crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code. (CVE-2021-22600)

Jürgen Groß discovered that the Xen subsystem within the Linux kernel did not adequately limit the number of events driver domains (unprivileged PV backends) could send to other guest VMs. An attacker in a driver domain could use this to cause a denial of service in other guest VMs. (CVE-2021-28711, CVE-2021-28712, CVE-2021-28713)

Jürgen Groß discovered that the Xen network backend driver in the Linux kernel did not adequately limit the amount of queued packets when a guest did not process them. An attacker in a guest VM can use this to cause a denial of service (excessive kernel memory consumption) in the network backend domain. (CVE-2021-28714, CVE-2021-28715)
